Sustainable Shrink Sleeve Packaging: Why It Matters for Brands

Recently in India, the Global Conclave on Plastics Recycling and Sustainability (GCPRS) was held at Bharat Mandapam, focusing on recycling technologies. Another similar conference, the Plastic Recycling Show, was planned in Mumbai, India, along with Sustainable Plastics USA and many more events scheduled to take place in key cities across the world. These conferences all discuss one essential topic: recyclability and plastic waste management.

Why do you think these conferences are being organized so frequently? We cannot afford to remain oblivious to this.

Plastic recycling plays a significant role in reducing carbon footprints. Across the world, FMCG brands are opting for environmentally friendly packaging solutions. My book, “5 Myths About Sustainable Shrink Sleeve,” busts several misconceptions that can be misleading when it comes to sustainability. My extensive 19 years of experience in shrink sleeve packaging has helped me understand sustainable practices from different perspectives.

In this article, you will gain clarity on why sustainability benefits everyone and why brands are increasingly adopting it. Here are some of the key factors influencing this decision.

1. ESG Goals

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals are measurable objectives that organizations use to monitor their ethical, social, and environmental impact. They provide a non-financial framework for organizations to contribute positively to society and the environment. In India, these goals are part of regulatory compliance and are monitored by SEBI. Following ESG guidelines provides several benefits to organizations while enhancing their credibility and long-term sustainability.

2. EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy that requires manufacturers to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their productsโ€”from production to disposal. It is especially important for plastic manufacturers, recyclers, and companies that use plastic in their products. In reality, almost every industry is affected by EPR. It acts as a catalyst for the circular economy, where every stage of the process is monitored, and responsible practices are recognized and rewarded by the government.

3. PCR Contribution

India’s Plastic Waste Management Rules mandate the use of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in rigid packaging and 10% PCR content in flexible packaging. Many other countries have even higher PCR content requirements to reduce the consumption of virgin plastic. This encourages the effective utilization of recycled plastic and supports a circular economy.

Apart from these initiatives, various government and regulatory bodies, such as the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), provide awards and recognition to organizations that actively contribute to sustainability.

The above initiatives represent the government’s committed efforts to reduce carbon footprints, and organizations are expected to comply with these regulations. Companies that follow these guidelines are rewarded with numerous benefits. As a result, more brands are choosing sustainable packaging solutions.

These reasons are in addition to the well-known advantages of shrink sleeve packaging. I have discussed the benefits of shrink sleeves in several of my previous articles. The combination of Sustainability and Shrink Sleeve has now become difficult for brands to ignore. Together, they meet both an organization’s branding objectives and its sustainability commitments toward the environment.
